Arava
Arava (or leflunomide) is prescribed to treat the symptoms of rheumatoid arthritis. It was approved in September of 1998 and has since been linked with more than 180 cases of liver toxicity. A public advocacy group, Public Citizen, has lobbied for the removal of the drug from public markets since 2002. The FDA has since warned that, in rare cases, the use of Arava can lead to liver damage.
The drug has also been linked to Stevens Johnson Syndrome, a skin disease resulting in rashes, peeling and sores. It is a serious and life threatening condition with no specific drug treatment. Because the labeling of drugs with the potential to cause Stevens Johnson Syndrome has only recently occured, millions of Americans have unknowingly consumed dangerous drugs which may cause the disease, including Arava.
