Dangerous Drugs - Cylert
In April of 2005, Abbot Laboratories, Inc., removed Cylert from the consumer market after the drug was deemed dangerous by the consumer group Public Citizen. The group charges that Cylert, a popular drug for combatting attention deficit disorder, caused nearly 21 cases of liver failure, including 13 that required transplants or were fatal.
Cylert acts as an acute stimulant and was approved for use against ADHD/ADD in 1975. According to Public Citizen, around 117,000 prescriptions for the drug were filled in the U.S. in 2004. 117,000 prescriptions were filed for the drug in 2004. Reports given to the FDA show that at least 193 patients have suffered serious consequences from the drug. Currently, generic versions are sold under the name Pemoline.
