Dangerous Drugs - Reglan
Reglan is a popular prescription drug for treating acid reflux disease. Reglan may cause the development of Tardive Dyskinesia (a neurological disorder causing involuntary movements of the face and limbs) and Neuroleptic Malignant Syndome (an often fatal neurological condition). Reglan has been approved for short-term use (4 to 12 weeks) only when more conservative treatments fail. Though the FDA approved the drug for this usage period, more than 1/3 of Reglan users take the drug for at least a 12 month span.
This unauthorized long-term use of Reglan can cause serious side effects such as the aforementioned Tardive Dyskinesia. The warning label for Reglan mentions the disease, however it suggests it only occurs "rarely." Two medical studies have shown the incidence of Tardive Dyskinesia to be between 27 and 29 percent amongst long-term users.
