Baxter Dialysis Filter
Baxter dialysis filters are a form of special tubing used in the process of kidney dialysis. Reports regarding potential injury and death caused by Baxter dialysis filters have led both the FDA and Baxter to issue warnings and recalls of the failing devices.
Dialysis tubing, sometimes referred to as visking tubing, is a type of semi- or partially-permeable membrane tubing made from regenerated cellulose or cellophane. It is used for diffusion, or more accurately osmosis, and only allows the passage of small molecules through its surface. It is used in clinical circumstances to ensure a filtered flow of molecules, preventing the flow of larger solute molecules.
More than five reports of death and two injuries initially prompted the recall. Since, at least 51 more deaths have been reported that the FDA believes were caused by the Baxter filter. A chemical used in its manufacture has been cited as the potential cause for the failure of the filters. Baxter has set aside $100 million to $150 million for litigation and related expenses. Dialysis centers have ceased using Baxter dialysis filters.
